Many thanks to Eddie Bush and Lee Wright
for all the maintenance work they accomplish inside and outside our
beautiful building. They paint and scrape and spray and clean and
perform a myriad of small jobs (and some large ones, too) that are
seldom noticed but would ultimately result in the deterioration of our
church.
For cost-cutting reasons, the Diaconate
has decided to not do a blanket mailing of the second quarter donation
forms. We will continue to do the first quarter, third quarter and end
of year reports. If you want a donation report you can contact me or
notify the office and I will gladly send you your form.

Three cheers for Linda Thomsen who has
been doing a fabulous job keeping our church bright and shiny! Thanks,
Linda, for the many hours you dedicate to our church and for the
wonderful work you do.

For years
I have told the Trustees that I would like a large, ornate, gold leafed
office. I have |
always added, that
as much as I wanted the fancy office, the first building priority had to
be more bathroom facilities.
The
Trustees agree about the bathrooms. It hurts me to admit they have been
uniformly rude and disrespectful about the ornate office suggestion.
There is
no question that we are woefully under-bathroomed for a building of our
size. But our bathroom facilities are also inadequate in the way they
are set up. For years people have complained about how handicap
unfriendly we are. The Trustees have looked into retrofitting the
bathrooms but have discovered that any renovation would be terribly
expensive and still fall short of disability standards. Retrofitting
would also decrease our already diminished capacity.
As far
as we can determine, our sewage outlet flows between the women’s
bathroom and the utility room. Since this is our only sewage outlet, it
severely restricts where we can site new bathrooms.
We have
determined that the area with the shortest access to our outlet is the
storage closet on the west side of the fellowship hall, directly across
from the women’s bathroom.
Unfortunately, the back wall of the closet is load bearing and cannot be
breached. To make the bathrooms big enough for a wheelchair we will need
to sacrifice four feet of the fellowship hall. However, even with the
new bathrooms, the hall should be large enough to accommodate all our
activities.
We also
will not be able to match the tile on the floor. So, the new tile will
contrast with the old.
The
estimate for one bathroom came in at about $22,000. The second bathroom
will cost $11,000 more. The Trustees agree that we need the extra
capacity and sometime in the future it will cost more than $11K to bring
a crew back into the building to construct a second facility. Because of
this, they recommend that the two facilities be constructed at the same
time.
A couple
of weeks ago I poked around the Boise First church. It was built within
five years of our building. I was struck by the fact that both buildings
lack adequate bathroom facilities. What was acceptable in the mid 1960’s
is not acceptable today. By building this facility we improve our
building and extend our hospitality to visitors and members alike.
If you
have any questions about this project call me or any member of the
Trustees. And please, come to the congregation meeting on June 13.
